In 2010 we caught the Scorpions in Berlin on their Farewell Tour, thinking it would be great to see them live one last time. When they released their MTV Unplugged album, we were there for their Cologne show too. Fast forward another year and not only are they back with Return To Forever, but the band is also celebrating 50 years in the music business!

The Scorpions revisited their metal roots with Sting In The Tail and Return To Forever is consistent with that choice. The opener, Going Out With A Bang, is a perfect choice to get the party started. Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jab deliver their distinctive guitar riffs energetically and Klaus Meine is at the height of his game. The second track, We Built This House, was also the first single released. A typical Scorpions song with a heavy chorus, it will no doubt have the crowds singing along during the upcoming 50th anniversary tour. Great chorus on Rollin’ Home too and the chords solo on Catch Your Luck And Play is amazing.
Scorpions Return To Forever Album Review
The Scorpions are also famous for writing some of the most beautiful ballads in the history of hard rock. It will of course be hard to ever top Still Loving You or Wind Of Change, but unlike on Sting In The Tail, this time the band does a pretty good job. The three ballads on the album all have their signature sound without being cheesy. My preference goes to the soulful House Of Cards with its mellow acoustic guitar arrangements.

Do I need to say we own the Deluxe version of that album too? 😉 Four tracks have been added for this edition. One could say the word “rock” appears a tad too often, but overall Return To Forever is a showcase for some pretty masterful song writing and impressive musicianship/vocals. Having sold over 100 million albums worldwide, Scorpions has nothing to prove anymore but still delivers.

Return To Forever

    1. Unbelievable, I know! Only Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker were part of the original band but Matthias Jabs came along not much later. Then James Kottak and Pawel Maciwoda is the latest member.
They are going on tour again – of course – I think it would be a lot of fun to go to one of their concerts together. What do think? 😉 xx

  1. Ooh now that’s a proposal! I’ve not kept up my heavy metal gigs since my teenage years and then they gave me tinnitus! Will have a look and a think 🙂

    1. Think away… 😀
As I said on Twitter, it could be an opportunity to pay Germany a visit too! 😉 xx
