Both First and Second Daughters’ birthdays are in October and of course the whole family rings fishing for present ideas. Two months later comes Christmas and guess what, the same question is being asked again. Over the years I have started suggesting vouchers or tickets for a show or another activity. After all there is a limit to how many toys, books, clothes, etc a child can own.
Last year I saw that “Cats” was going to be performed in a nearby town for a few months in 2011 and decided that this would make a perfect Christmas present. Luckily I found enough takers, at 95 Euros per ticket and needing four this was not going to be a cheap evening. May 28th, date of our “Cats” outing came in the end quickly. I had seen the show twice before in London, the first time twenty years ago and the second time five years later with my two stepdaughters, but it was a first for Sexy Hubby and the girls.
We had a very enjoyable time, starting with a drink in the little garden area in front of the huge tents mounted for the occasion as the sun was setting. Once inside we had the obligatory stop at the merchandise stall, where two feline lunch boxes were purchased. We were then thrilled to discover how close to the stage our seats were located, therefore allowing us not to miss anything of the show. As the magic started, I was touched to see on my daughters’ faces the same look of wonder that I had seen on my stepdaughters’ all these years ago. We all agreed that Rum Tum Tugger was the coolest of the lot, and First Daughter also loved Mr. Mistoffelees while Victoria the White Cat appealed to Second Daughter. I was as always moved by Grizabella’s plea. After the interval with another drink and ice-creams for the girls, we returned to our seats and Sexy Hubby particularly enjoyed Gus remembering playing Growltiger.
The show came to an end too quickly and it was time already to go back to the human world. One more thing: the show was of course in German, and this did keep throwing me having seen it in English before, especially when “Memory” was sung, as “Erinnerung” is quite different!
