A Moment Of True Happiness

The last six months of 2015 were filled with our massive house renovation project (see Buying And Renovating A House | Part I and Buying And Renovating A House | Part II) and our move.

This spring, it is our garden we are busy with, transforming it into our own little corner of paradise. Ivy was pulled out and more plants took its place in the hedge, grass was planted in front of the kitchen/dining room and a new home found for bushes. Lovely sand stones got a new life as steps and a bench. Old garden furniture has been repainted and the hammock under the cherry tree is quickly becoming a favourite spot.

And there is the garden house. Originally a simple shed, we decided it was far too pretty to be used as storage. It has been painted in grey and white and left over wooden floor from the lounge installed. The idea is to be able to stay “outside” when it is cooler in the evenings or starting to drizzle, so there is a day bed and a little table in it. An Indian screen and an old trunk hide what needs to stay out of sight. We are almost there, I just need to print some photos to put in the lovely frame I bought and when we go to the South of France this summer, we will buy a painting as the finishing touch.

Last weekend, I was sitting outside, relaxing while colouring in the book I had borrowed from Second Daughter. I was doing my best to ignore the ominous dark clouds gathering, until the wind picked up and the storm started. Instead of rushing back to the house, I opened the garden house and took refuge inside. Sexy Hubby, braving the elements in true Viking style, brought me a glass of white wine and some salted almonds. It was pouring down yet I was safe and cosy, looking at our lovely new home while inhaling the fresh smell rain brings.

I smiled. This was just perfect, a moment of true happiness, a moment of grace.

Organic Box Delivered To Your Door

This is a service we recently signed up for and we are big fans. Every Wednesday, an organic box filled with fresh vegetables, onions, eggs and a loaf of bread is being delivered to our door. All contents have been cultivated or made in our region.

What do we get? It is a surprise, although you can let the shop now if food allergies or personal preferences mean that some veggies have to be left out. I love the fact that you have to get creative and compose your meals with what you find in the box. For example, a whole celeriac was once part of the delivery. I had always bought part of one before, to add to a soup. I started flicking through some cookbooks and decided to try an Ottolenghi recipe called “Celeriac and Lentils with Hazelnuts and Mint“. The salad was a huge success. With the other half I prepared a puree, served with grilled salmon and carrots. Very nice too.

As for the bread, you can either pick which one you want or opt for a rotation of the (many) sorts available. We chose the second option to discover new flavours and the bread keeps significantly longer than shop-bought.

Going on holiday is not a problem, a quick email and there will be no box waiting for you. When I am not home, we have an agreement about a dropping off place out of the rain, sun, etc. Should you wish for specific vegetables, not need some products one week or want to add something from the online shop, again an email will do the trick.

Supporting local farms and businesses as well as cooking with very fresh, seasonal vegetables? A winning combination, if you ask me.

The Perfect Weekend

Friday night, Sexy Hubby, Second Daughter, Cute Doggy and I headed to one of our local restaurants for a family dinner. I was having a bit of an off day, to be honest. Annoying little things such as iPhone syncing problems – still not resolved! -and builders keeping you waiting, on top of feeling like I had a cold coming. Still, most of the evening was enjoyable until I decided to have a moan. On the way home, Second Daughter told me in no uncertain terms what she thought of my complaining. She was spot on and it was kind of a wake up call. I was grateful to her for pointing out to me things that should have been obvious.

On Saturday morning, I was feeling much better and headed off to my Pilates class together with a neighbour, who is quickly becoming a good friend. We had a nice chat afterwards and then she had to go. As for me, I made my way to the wellness area, fairly quiet at that time. The sun was shining and it was bliss to simply relax. I enjoyed my two trips to the sauna, the homemade bircher muesli I had brought with me and I finished my book. I drove home and it was then time to get some fresh air. Sexy Hubby and I had a lovely walk with Cute Doggy, the sun on our faces definitely hinting at the arrival of spring. Back from our stroll, Second Daughter joined us in the kitchen and we started preparing some dishes for our Sunday brunch with friends. A glass of Prosecco for us adults, lively music on, soon a tortilla, an olive and tuna tart and a carrot cake were ready. We ended the day enjoying the warmth of our tiled stove while watching a movie.

Sunday came and there was no stress in the morning as so much had been done the day before. Sexy Hubby took Cute Doggy out and Second Daughter and I finished preparing the food and setting a pretty table. The day with our friends was delightful, lots of chatting and laughing, and a walk to make room for the cake!

In the evening, Sexy Hubby and I snuggled up by the fire again to watch Vikings. At some point in the episode, a search party left with dogs and Cute Doggy made us laugh. He stood up, alert, and barked in response to the on-screen dogs, clearly ready to join them. When the scene changed, he looked a bit confused, then eventually settled down again and went back to sleep.

For me, this was exactly what a perfect weekend should be like and I was happy that even the Friday night, which could have gone wrong, ended up on a positive note.

How was your weekend?
