Die Kantine – Koeln

The day before heading to the eagerly awaited Blackberry Smoke concert Sexy Hubby and I had driven to Switzerland for a family event. On the Saturday morning we got up relatively early and after breakfast drove all the way back to Cologne. We had time to check into our hotel, get changed and have a drink and a quick bite to eat before jumping into a taxi to go to the venue. Once at the Kantine, all hint of tiredness was however forgotten and we secured a good spot to enjoy the concert – and take photos, of course.

Massive, in their own words “a deadly 8 legged Aussie rock-monster that isn’t for the faint-hearted”, opened the evening and certainly lived up to the description. Their first album, Full Throttle, was released in July this year and the band was nominated for the Best New Band category in the 2014 Classic Rock Magazine Roll of Honour. Pretty good, I would say.

Coming not from their land of Georgia but from Paris, Blackberry Smoke then got on stage and started with Like I Am from their album A Little Piece of Dixie. It was the first time that we were seeing them live and I can tell you one thing: these guys are just so cool. With more than 250 concerts a year, Blackberry Smoke must also be one of the hardest working bands in the business. They built up their fan base with their brilliant live shows and I found there was almost a sense of community that night; bound by music, smiling at people standing next to you and cheering when the first notes of a favourite song – in my case One Horse Town and Pretty Little Lie – resonated.

Sexy Hubby and I had also purchased a Meet & Greet ticket and made our way backstage after the end of the show. Charlie, Richard, Brit, Paul and Brandon were relaxed and friendly, it was lovely to meet them, get our CD signed and posed together for the traditional photo. They did not mind when I asked if another one could be taken with my own camera too and graciously obliged. Oh, and I must say that I am totally jealous of their hair!

Blackberry Smoke has just signed with a new label, Rounder Records, in time for the release next February of their fourth album, Holding All the Roses. We are looking forward to discover it and of course to catch up with the band as there will be enough gigs to choose from!

They are indeed very hairy! You are both looking good. Isn’t it good that they will pose nicely for photos, I sometimes imagine you will be poo-poo’d a bit at these meet and greets – glad it wasn’t that way at all. Worth the drive 🙂

It is quite rare that I pose with men sporting longer hair than me, I must say! 😉
They were lovely, just like Europe in the summer. 🙂 xx

I agree, great name and their music is really worth listening too if you like bluesy-country rock. 🙂
Thank you, I am quite pleased with the way my concert photos are turning out. 😀 xx

I’ve not heard of them but that’s no surprise as my rocking days seem to be a long way in my past, I’m ashamed to admit.
Glad you had a great weekend with your man 🙂 x
